EOM—End of message
The last subject line above (EOM) is an especially powerful one. Here’s how it works: When you have a short, simple message to convey, type the entire e-mail in the subject line of the e-mail, and put EOM at the end. (For example, “Tuesday marketing meeting moved to 2 p.m. EOM.”) Now your recipient does not have to open the e-mail message, saving them precious minutes.
When e-mail subject line best practices spread throughout an organization, the savings in time and energy can be significant. A few months ago, the sales team of a consumer products company reached out to me because they were overwhelmed by e-mails. One strategy they implemented was agreeing to specific, standard subject lines that would enable them to prioritize incoming messages and more effectively manage their days. Within three months of making this one adjustment, the sales representatives were spending fewer hours each week on administrative e-mails, and client response times had improved by 20 percent.
Stop neglecting the subject line on your e-mail messages, and watch your productivity soar.
